Theory Thursday: Million Dollar Slaves?

With Kendrick Lamar’s recent Super Bowl performance announcement and Tyreek Hill’s brutal arrest captured on camera, the start of the NFL season has us grappling with a few familiar contradictions when it comes to race, sports, and culture.

On one hand, Kendrick dominated the summer with “Not Like Us,” calling out Drake for being a colonizer in hip hop. Yet on the other, he uses the American flag as the backdrop for his Super Bowl announcement. And just few years ago, Colin Kaepernick knelt for the very reasons that led to Tyreek Hill being face down on the pavement. 

Yet, many of us will be glued to our TVs every Sunday, watching the NFL carry out their modern day plantation. 

Needless to say, we have a lot to discuss.
